Week of May 16th

Science

Monday:  We will be learning what happens when someone gets an ulcer and doing an activity to help show this.  We will also start preparing for a lab on neutralizing stomach acid

Tuesday:  We will be discussing the urinary system and kidney problems.  They will have an article about kidney stones to read and "talk back" to.

Wednesday:  We will do teh lab activity on neutralizing stomach acid.  They will need to complete the analysis at the end of the lab

Thursday:  We will review how nutrients move through the body and begin a discussion of how to dissect the frog.

Friday:  We will do an online version of frog dissection to prepare for the actual dissection starting next Monday.  We will have a lot of kids absent today with the band trip so they need to make sure they complete this activity at home or come in early to use the computers here at school.


Health

Monday:  We will finish the graph for our hypertension activity on Friday and view the video on Heart Attacks.  No homework

Tuesday:  We will discuss the parts of the blood and blood types.  Complete the w.s. "Composition of the Blood"

Wednesday:  We will review blood types and practice typing simulated blood

Thursday:  We will review blood typing and do an online activity with blood typing.  They will have a worksheet to complete called "Matchmaker"

Friday:  No health today.  We have a visitor from the library to speak to all the kids during this time about the summer reading program

Week of May 9th

Science:
Monday:  We will continue talking about nutrients in food and evaluate cereal labels for the most nutritious cereal.  They will have an article to read and take notes over.

Tuesday - Wednesday:  We will finish up discussing nutrition by viewing the video "Super size Me"  No homework

Thursday:  We will begin the digestive system by doing several activities to see how food moves through the system.  No homework

Friday:  We will do an activity called "How long is your digestive system" and will have a worksheet to complete over the digestive system.

Health:

Monday:  Quiz over heart structure and we will discuss circulation and heart problems

Tuesday;  We will finish up with heart problems.  They will have a section (p. 365-369) to read out of their folder and questions to answer.

Wednesday:  We will be doing an activity on the laptops about heart transplants.  No homework

Thursday:  We will discuss hypertension.  They will have an article on this to read and they are to make a mind map over the information.

Friday:  We will be doing an online activity on hypertension.  No homework.

Week of May 1st

Science

Monday:  We will begin our last unit on nutrition and digestion.  The students will have a work sheet on vitamins to complete

Tuesday:  No homework.  We will be doing Vitamin C testing in class

Wednesday:  We will finish up the Vitamin C lab during class.  They will have an article on fat in diets to read.  They should take notes on the worksheet provided about each major rule about fat

Thursday:  We will dicuss sugars in food along with artificial sweeteners.  We will work on an activity in class about this that they may need to finish up at home

Friday:  We will be learning how to read ingredient labels.  The work should be completed in class.

Health

Monday:  No homework.  We began our discussion of the circulatory system

Tuesday:  We looked at the structure of the heart and how blood flows through the heart.  They had a worksheet called "Colors of the Heart" to finish.  Our next quiz will involve them labeling the parts of the heart and answering questions about how blood flows through the heart.

Wednesday:  We will take a look at pig hearts to see if they can recognize structures on real hearts.  They will have a worksheet to complete called "Blood Flow Through the Heart"

Thursday:  We will discuss types of blood vessels and pulse points and will complete a lab in class on determining pulse rates

Friday:  We will review the heart structure with several activities to prepare for the quiz on Monday.  They will have a worksheet to complete called "Review of Blood Flow Through the Heart"

Week of April 25th

Science:

Monday:  We will continue with our discussion of acid rain and air pollution.  The students will set up an experiment to see the efffects of acid rain on seed germination.  No homework

Tuesday:  We will do an activity to look at how the soil can help buffer acid rain and then move on to learning about the greenhouse effect and global warming.  They will have an article on global warming to read and respond to.

Wednesday:  We will discuss renewable and nonrenewable resources and resource depletion.  No homework

Thursday:  We will finish up the seed germination lab and prepare for the test on Friday.  Students will be able to use their notes and information sheets in their folders but will need to be organized in order to finish the test during the time period.

Friday:  They will have the whole period to take the test and may use their notes and information sheets.  They will need to complete the test during this one time period.


Health

Monday:  We will be looking at the skin and skin problems.  No homework

Tuesday:  We will discuss what happens when the body sweats and do an activity to show this.

Wednesday:  Most of the period will be spent bringing the material together and reviewing for the quiz over the skeletal, muscular and skin systems on Thursday.  They will have a crossword puzzle to complete.   Study vocabulary words and notes

Thursday:  Quiz over skeletal, muscular and integument systems.

Friday:  No health today.  Students will be participating in Book Talk at this time.

Week of April 18th

Science:

Monday:  We will be looking at macroinvertebrates and using them to determine water quality.  No homework

Tuesday:  We will be doing a lab activity in class with the macroinvertebrates.  No homework

Wednesday:  I will begin talking about air pollution and acid rain.  They will have an article on acid rain to read and do the questions

Thursday:  We will continue with air pollution and set u a lab showing the effects of acid rain.  No homework

Friday:  No science classes today.  The counselor will be in my room


Health

Monday:  We will begin talking about muscles and preparing for the chicken wing dissection.  They will need to read the article on muscle cramps and do the questions.

Tuesday - Wednesday:  We will be dissecting the chicken wing to learn about the muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones.  They will have a chicken wing summary to complete to turn in Thursday.

Thursday:  We will discuss injuries to the skeletal and muscular systems.  They will have a worksheet on sports injuries to finish

Friday:  We will see a video on Broken Bones.  No homework

Week of April 11th

Science:

Monday:  We will discuss water chemistry and prepare for our chemical tests of water samples.  No homework

Tuesday - Wednesday:  We will have very short classes due to MAP testing.  During class time, we will be doing water chemstry tests.  No homework

Thursday:  We will discusss how macroinvertebrates can also be indicators of water quality and do an activity.  They should complete the activity w.s. for homework

Friday:  We will do an activity trying to solve a problem with water quality.


Health

Monday:  We will be discussing joints and reading an article on knuckles popping

Tuesday:  No health today

Wednesday;  We will be doing a lab activity with joints

Thursday:  we will be working on the computers with a program on knee surgery

Friday:  No health today

Week of April 4th

Science:

Monday;  We will be discussing how landfills are designed and built.  They will have a worksheet to finish

Tuesday:  We will be building models of landfills to understand how they maintain wastes.  They will read a news article "Down in the Dumps" and do the questions attached.

Wednesday:  We will begin to look at how solid wastes affect our water quality and will do a lab activity .  They will have a news paper article about sewage dumped into Lake of the Ozarks to read and finish.

Thursday:  I will be giving them information about water chemistry.  They will need to complete a work sheet on this.

Friday:  We will do chemical water testing to determine if the water is safe to drink.  They will need to read a newspaper article about pharmaceuticals in our water supplies and "talk back" to the article.

Health:

Monday:  Last day of the 3rd quarter.  Students will be turning in folders and will start new exploratory classes tomorrow.  Today we will be doing some computer work with reflex and reaction times.

Tuesday:  We will be setting up new folders and explaining the unit.  I will start with the skeletal system and discussion of major bones.  No homework

Wednesday:  I will finish the discussion of the major bones.  They will have a worksheet comparing the arm and leg to complete.

Thursday:  We will do a lab activity called "Name that Bone" to help them identify the bones of the skeleton.  I will also begin a discussion of joints.  No homework.     Skeleton quiz Monday

Friday:  We will review the bones for the skeleton quiz on Monday.   I will finish up talking about joints and we will do an activity on this.
